The Challenge
- A corrosion survey and ultrasonic thickness testing were required to determine the severity of section loss within the bridge.
- The work included a coating survey in line with CM431 and hazardous material analysis.
- The survey had to be completed from inside the box girder to access the stiffeners and diaphragms.
- Heavy corrosion deposits and lead coatings were present.
Our Solution
- Confined space working procedures were adopted, with a rescue team on standby to ensure confined space regulations were adhered to.
- The survey was carried out by a specialist team of PCN-qualified NDT technicians and ICorr coating inspectors.
- The enabling work included removing 2.4 tonnes of corrosion and preparing over 1,600 locations for ultrasonic thickness testing. Operatives were face-fit tested and equipped with powered respirators to comply with CLAW and COSHH.
- Once the corrosion and coating survey was complete, drain holes were cleared and leaking joints sealed to prevent water pooling in future.
